Story

Autarkhos, or "Ark" as they had been advised, was calm, gentle and serious. They passed Alexandra's stall, whom was in heat and about to be bred. She kicked at her stall and pulled faces at him, but Ark turned no ear. He simply dropped his head low, and moseyed on through the dark and airy stable into the sunlight outside. And when it hit him, Anna nearly had to squint in the glare.

He really was quite a big horse, Anna thought as she stepped back to watch him standing calmly in the morning air, surveying and sucking in the smells around him. Wearing on seventeen hands, bulked with muscle that shimmered in the bright light, it was any wonder he wanted to stretch his legs on release in the outer paddocks of the estate. And stretch them he did. After a moment Anna led him through the gate into a paddock that was empty of any horses that might not roll out the welcome wagon. As soon as the leadrope clipped off his halter, he was gone. He wasn't even wild, though. There was no bucking or nonsense, something that Anna had been promised upon purchase, just a smooth, extended gallop. Head low, ears forward, passing over the green and brown blades of grass with elegant speed. Anna smiled as she leaned on the fence, watching him as he circled back around. He had energy for certain, but none of the high strung nervousness and excitement that ex-racers were often flawed with. "What a gem," she found herself saying. With such an even nature and strong temperament, he could do very well in retraining, and completely skip out the hours needed to calm a horse from the track back to an acceptable standard.

"I'm sure KhanCohban were sore to lose him," Damien said as he joined her.
They watched the big red gently turn and clear an Emubush in his stride, catching a collective gasp from his audience.
"Cross-country for sure," he added.
Anna shook her head, "No, he's too lovely for cross country. Dressage. Emily can have him, I think."
"Don't forget his stud value."
"That too. Think Alex might have him?"
Damien took a wary eye back into the stable where the mare was still making noise, "Unlikely. I'm nervous enough about that Waler."
Anna grinned, remembering, "Madonna then."

He eased to a trot, passing under a blue gum, snorting with comfort. His movement was swinging, natural, free off stiffness that again often came from the hard wear of racing. Ark was a strong horse at 8 years, and still had plenty of life left in him. As Anna pushed off the fence and swung the halter over her shoulder, Ark threw a lead change and was off again in a beautiful rocking canter, over the hills and far away. Damien smiled as he watched, turning to follow Anna. He popped an arm over her shoulder.
"They'll have the calmest baby in the world," he said, "I like it."
